Bean Traders 2.6.09 7:30 am
Got up bright and early today to get another bit of research in. Phil and I headed to Bean Traders Coffee, which is on 9th St here in Durham. Originally, when I started this project, I was placing my focus on the three local roasters: Counter Culture, Larry’s and Joe Van Gogh. However, this morning, I was surprised to learn that BT also has their own local roaster, David Chapman. Like the other roasters, they purchase beans from all over the world and then roast them here in the Triangle.
The Bean Traders Cafe on 9th is a great spot if you wanna sit outside or even hull-up in their basement and get work done. They have free Wi-Fi and often have a great, relaxing environment.
Today’s coffee was their French Roast (the darkest of their coffees) which is ideal for an elementary school teacher on a Friday, after a night of double-date bowling;). Maybe it’s the time of year and my longing for warmer days…but this coffee, from the first sip, brought me to a very nostalgic place. Back in Wisconsin there was a coffee shop called Racy D’Lene’s*. The “Racy’s Blend is similar to this BT French Roast…a smokey, eye opener with a refreshing almost nutty aftertaste. Honestly, it’s the cup of coffee that makes you skip class, sit on the porch all day, smoke cigarettes and re-read novel J.D. Salinger ever wrote.
*Full disclosure, my now husband was a barista at this very coffee shop all through college, so I frequented it more often for reasons other than coffee.
